TECHBRIEF Friction Angles of Open- Graded Aggregates From Large-Scale Direct Shear Testing

چکیده
Introduction State and local transportation agencies frequently use opengraded aggregates for wall, roadway, and bridge construction. The primary advantages of using this type of material in wall and abutment applications are ease of constructability, lighter in-place density than well-graded materials, very low fine content, free-draining characteristics, and simpler quality assurance testing, using a method specification for field density. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) classifies open-graded aggregates according to the M43 gradation based on standard sizes for processed aggregates.(1) Despite common use of these aggregates, their strength characteristics have not been systematically measured or used in design. Instead, engineers frequently use a default friction angle of 34,o leading to potential conservatism in retaining wall and foundation design. The primary purpose of this TechBrief is to present research results on the strength properties of standard open aggregates tested in a large-scale direct shear (LSDS) device to improve the state of practice for the design of structures using these materials.

Frictional resistance of coal dust fouled uniformly graded aggregates
Large deposits of coal over vast expanse of lands attract mining companies, power stations and petrochemical companies and thus the development of coal towns with rail and road networks. High traffic volume of large quantities of coal across coal cities often result in the gradual accumulation of fine coal dust particles on road pavements, rail ballast and sleepers. The effect of coal dust on t...
متن کاملA Study of the Rockfill Material Behavior in Large-Scale Tests
Inspecting the behavior of the rockfill materials is of significant importance in analysis of rockfill dams. Since the dimensions of grains in such materials are greater than the conventional sizes suitable for soil mechanics tests, it is necessary to experimentally study them in specific large-scale apparatuses. In this research, the behavior of rockfill materials in two large rockfill dams co...
متن کاملStudying the effect of roughness on soil-geotextile interaction in direct shear test
Abstract One of the methods of increasing soil resistance against failure is soil reinforcement using geosynthetics. Soil-geosynthetic interactions are of great importance and are affected by friction and adhesion at their interface. Soil gradation, contact surface roughness and geotextile density are among the factors affecting soil-geotextiles interaction this study, to investigate the eff...
متن کاملEffects of Particle Size on the Shear Behavior of Coarse Grained Soils Reinforced with Geogrid
In order to design civil structures that are supported by soils, the shear strength parameters of soils are required. Due to the large particle size of coarse-grained soils, large direct shear tests should be performed. In this study, large direct shear tests on three types of coarse grained soils (4.5 mm, 7.9 mm, and 15.9 mm) were performed to evaluate the effects of particle size on the shear...
متن کاملFriction Angle Measurements on a Naturally Formed Gravel Streambed: Implications for Critical Boundary Shear Stress
We report the first measurements of friction angles for a naturally formed gravel streambed. For a given test grain size placed on a bed surface, friction angles varied from 10" to over 100'; friction angle distributions can be expressed as a function of test grain size, median bed grain size, and bed sorting parameter. Friction angles decrease with increasing grain size relative to the median ...
